In pre-pandemic times, I used to wake up, go to work, eat both my breakfast and lunch in the office, then go to some 3-4 hour comedy rehearsal, get home by 11 and pass out. My life now is very different and that’s the subject of many an internal monologue/identity crisis, but I’ll save that for my therapist and not for you, dear readers. You might have noticed that I left out dinner time in the above schedule and that’s because most of the time, I had to scarf down something on the subway from work to whatever comedy nonsense I was doing (eating on the subway, by the way, is one of those things that may likely never return post-pandemic, and as much as that’s probably for the best, I did always appreciate having a moment to sit (or tbh stand) and eat instead of food as I was also trying to focus on something else. Plus, I liked watching people’s faces when they saw I was eating. YEAH I’m in a HURRY, BUDDY. Sorry, I’m BOOKED and BUSY. TAKE A PICTURE IT’LL LAST LONGER)
The perfect — perfect! — food to consume when you’re running in between things is always — always! — the Pret Sandwich. Any Pret Sandwich! Cheddar and tomato, chicken salad and avocado, egg salad and arugula. Their WRAPS?! (come on, talk about a perfect transportation food) Bang bang chicken, mozzarella and red pepp, falafel and hummus! They even have subs!!! Tuna and cucumber! Chicken and mozz! Caprese!!! LOOK at the range of flavors I’m listing. You can’t get this flavor spread at your local coffee shop! Or even if you can, can you shove those sandwiches in your bag with ease as you sprint towards the subway because you’re already 10 minutes late? Can you hold them in one hand while clutching a pole with the other and frantically trying to remember the hilarious lines in your sketch like “I thought that dinner was YESTERDAY!”
Probably not!!! You probably CANNOT!!!!
The Pret Sandwich is reliable. It’s quick and easy and relatively cheap. And LEST we forget it is made fresh!!! Every day!!!!!! I had my a Pret Sandwich tonight for the first time in a while and it instantly took me back to all these harried evenings. I was also surprised! I’m 99% positive that this was the first Pret Sandwich I had since the pandemic started. Which is nuts because it was such a staple in my life before! And then I remembered that the Pret Sandwich is not for the evenings when you’re laying around the house, watching movies because you have time to kill. It’s not for the times when you’re soaking up an eventless night by playing board games or trying a new hobby. It is for the times when you have 10 minutes and you need to eat a full meal. And tonight, as I walked through Union Square, scarfing down a Pret chipotle chicken and avocado wrap in one hand and an iced tea in the other, I remembered what it felt like to be busy, to be active, to be a part of things.
I loved it! And I <3 u pret
***Disclaimer that I know a lot of people think this subway eating habit is disgusting and/or that it is NOT fun to be busy and that it is stressful to be frantically eating and both of those statements are fair! Me, personally, I like being busy and I like my life when I’m busy and if you don’t like the way I live it, why did you sign up for this newsletter where I talk about how I live my stupid life?????? KISS :*
